York Fire & Life Safety officials say two cats are missing and a person was treated for smoke exposure after a two-story house caught fire in York County Thursday night.

Fire crews responded to the 700 block of Schooner Boulevard just before 11 p.m. Thursday for a call of a structure fire, according to a Fire & Life Safety news release.

When they arrived, firefighters found the two-story house heavily engulfed in flames, the release said.

All house occupants had left the building and told crews the smoke alarms had been working.

One person was treated for smoke exposure at the scene, but did not need to be transported to the hospital, the release said. There were no additional injuries to either residents or firefighters.

Two cats “remain unaccounted for,” the release said.

James City County and Williamsburg fire departments assisted in extinguishing the fire, and the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office was also on scene, the release said.

The American Red Cross is providing assistance to the family.

An adjacent house also suffered some heat damage, the release said.

A news release at 5:15 a.m. Friday states firefighters were still on scene assisting with the investigating and conducting overhaul.

The cause and origin of the fire are still under investigation.
