Power surge causes structure fires in Kingsmill, Grove areas, officials say

Update 8:50 p.m.: Many residents and businesses in the Grove and Kingsmill areas of James City County were affected by an “extensive” power surge on Wednesday. According to a county news release, the first call came in at 3:39 p.m. Within two hours, fire crews responded to 44 calls related to the power surge — with two calls for structure fires and two calls for transformer fires. No injuries were reported.

“Dominion crews are continuing to investigate the power surge,” the release stated. “Conditions have returned to normal.”

James City County fire crews responded to “several” structure fires in the Grove and Kingsmill areas after a power surge ran through the county Wednesday afternoon.

The power surge caused electrical shorts and structure fires, a James City County news release said.

Fire officials responded to “numerous” 911 calls, according to the release.

Dominion Energy has been informed of the power surge and was working to rectify the issue Wednesday evening, the release said.
