Police rescued a dog Aug. 18 after they found it locked inside an empty mobile home with no food or water, according to York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office officials.

The dog was discovered after a call came in around 11 p.m. alerting police to incessant barking inside a trailer in the Grafton Mobile Home park, located in the 1100 block of Oriana Road, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Shelley Ward said.

When police arrived, the resident who made the phone call said there was an “unattended” dog left inside a cage in a locked trailer, Ward said.

Ward said the trailer appeared to have no power and it looked as if no one was living there, adding the previous tenants had been evicted.

Police looked inside the locked trailer and saw a “small” dog in a cage in the kitchen area of the home. The dog had no food or water and was covered in what police believed was urine, Ward said.

It was not clear how long the dog had been in the trailer, Ward said.

The dog was handed over to animal control. Police have not yet found its owners, Ward said.
