A gas station employee has been charged with embezzlement and larceny after $1,000 in cash and merchandise went missing from the store.
The James City County Police Department has active warrants for Sophia Phillips of Toano. Both of the crimes Phillips is charged with are felonies.
According to police spokeswoman Stephanie Williams, the 33-year-old allegedly stole $400 in cash, $500 in lottery tickets and $100 in food from the Shell station in Norge between July 1 and 26. The warrants had not yet been served Wednesday.
The employer noticed the items were gone when Phillips deposited only $177 of the required $577 at a nightly drop deposit, and also found lottery tickets were missing earlier in the month. When the employer approached Phillips, she admitted to taking food and drinks off the shelf without paying.
Phillips reportedly promised to repay the money by Aug. 3 and offered to have the funds taken out of her next paycheck. According to the police report, the money had not yet been repaid Wednesday.
Phillips gave no reason for allegedly stealing the items. An employee at the Shell Station confirmed Phillips no longer works there.
