VIRGINIA BEACH — Walmart will unveil its remodeled Supercenter Friday morning and it will include the region’s first online pickup tower.
The tower is a 16-feet-tall vending machine that can fulfill a customer’s online order in less than a minute, according to a press release.
Here’s how it works: a customer selects an item on Walmart.com and selects the pickup option at checkout. When the item arrives at the store at 2021 Lynnhaven Parkway, an employee will load it into the tower. The customer picks it up by scanning a bar code sent to their phone or with a code number.
The remodeling is part of a $6 billion investment in the United States.
“The pickup tower pilot phase has been so successful Walmart is expanding it to additional locations across the country and we’re proud to be the first in Hampton Roads,” store manager Marty Reighard said.
Other store improvements at the Virginia Beach store include an enhanced baby department, a larger bakery and more self-checkout registers.
The store will celebrate its grand reopening Friday at a 7:15 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony.
