More than two dozen James City County firefighters responded to a mulch fire Saturday morning, fire officials said.
The fire broke out around 6:30 a.m. in a mulch pile at Yard Works, located at 20 Marclay Drive, according to James City County Fire Chief Ryan Ashe.
The fire was contained by 9:30 a.m., although there was still a “considerable amount” of smoke in the area, the release said.
Lake Powell Road is closed because fire trucks are connected to a fire hydrant located beside the street, Ashe said.
The road will likely be closed most of the day, but police and the Virginia Department of Transportation have a detour in place through a neighborhood.
Ashe said fire crews will be on scene through most of Saturday and likely into Saturday night keeping the fire contained. The mulch is not expected to completely stop burning for several days to a week, Ashe said.
Yard Works employees used the company’s equipment to move other unburned materials and mulch away from the fire to prevent it from spreading, Ashe said.
