A James City County man had a serious scare last week after he received a scam call from Mexico saying his daughter was going to be killed, according to police.
Police say the 65-year-old man received a phone call around 11:15 a.m. Sunday with a crying woman on the other end of the line, James City County Police spokeswoman Stephanie Williams said.
The man told police the woman sobbed “they are going to kill me,” Williams said.
A man then came on the phone and told the 65-year-old he kidnapped his daughter, and unless he paid them, he would kill her, Williams said.
The man asked his adult son call his daughter while waiting on the line with the scammer, Williams said.
The man then hung up on the caller after his son confirmed his 42-year-old daughter was safe. The man did not pay any money, Williams said.
Moments later, the daughter also got a phone call from an unfamiliar number, also identified as being from Mexico. The woman did not pick up, police said.
Williams said it was likely the caller was going down a list of phone numbers with the same scam, because the daughter’s phone number was one digit off from her father’s.
The investigation into the incident is no longer active, because there was no money or property lost.
