VIRGINIA BEACH — Several veterans’ organizations are coming together to honor locals who served in the military during the Vietnam War with a ceremony later this year, but they need help planning the event.
The event is scheduled for this fall in support of the 50th anniversary commemoration of the Vietnam War, a program established in 2008 by the National Defense Authorization Act authorized the Secretary of Defense.
“Veterans from the Vietnam era faced different conditions than today’s military veterans, and we want to make sure they each get the recognition they deserve for their service,” John J. Uhrin, III, local Navy Vietnam War veteran, said in a news release.
Uhrin is leading the charge to organize the event and said he’s looking for people who served on active duty between Nov. 1, 1955 and May 15, 1975, regardless of location, to register online in an effort to gauge what type of event to book, according to a city news release.
The program will honor service members, prisoners of war, those listed as MIA, highlight wartime research advancement in several subjects, recognize allies and more.
Those who served and attend the event will be eligible to receive a commemoration lapel pin.
The deadline to register is at the end of July.
