VIRGINIA BEACH — A 61-year-old man will spend 15 years in prison for sexually abusing a child, officials say.
Stephen Kent Brooks, of Virginia Beach, was sentenced to 25 years in prison with 10 suspended in Virginia Beach Circuit Court on Monday, according to a news release from the city’s Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.
The sentencing came three months after Brooks pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated sexual battery of a child under the age of 13, object sexual penetration and two counts of indecent liberties.
The evidence against Brooks included the abused child reporting incidents that occurred in 2008 and 2011. The child said they knew Brooks when the abuse happened, the news release states.
Brooks wrote an apology letter to the child, and admitted to exposing himself to the victim; however, he told police he never touched the child. Brooks did tell police that the child isn’t a liar and that if the child was reporting abuse something “must have” happened, according to the news release.
