VIRGINIA BEACH — This weekend, a pilot shuttle route will connect the Oceanfront to the Bayfront.

Hampton Roads Transit’s VB Wave Bayfront shuttle begins service Sunday, May 21 at 8 a.m. and runs every 45 minutes until midnight.

The route begins at Arctic Avenue and 19th Street, runs along a portion of Pacific Avenue into Atlantic Avenue with a stop at First Landing State Park, and continues to Shore Drive and Vista Circle.

The shuttle is a 4000 Gillig Hybrid, which is a change from VB Wave’s familiar trolley-like aesthetic.

The city’s share of the cost is $261,000 to operate two shuttles for the season and it will cost someone $2 to ride it one way.

The shuttle will run daily from May 21-Sept. 4 and then exclusively on weekends until Oct. 1, according to HRT’s website.

The new route is a pilot program, according to Ray Amoruso, HRT chief planning and development officer, but if it meets a minimum of 150 riders a day, he said it could return next year.
