A Williamsburg man was stopped at Dulles International Airport in Washington D.C. Monday after TSA agents discovered a loaded .40 caliber handgun in his carry-on baggage, according to a news release.
The Glock-style pistol was found loaded with seven rounds when the Williamsburg man entered a Transportation Security Administration checkpoint, the release said.
The man was detained until Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police could respond to the checkpoint to confiscate the handgun and cite the man on weapons charges, according to the release.
The man was ticketed to fly to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the release said. When asked about the man’s identity, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police referred a reporter to the TSA, who referred a reporter back to the police. Neither provided identity information.
Firearms, firearm parts and ammunition cannot be transported in carry-on baggage, but can be transported in checked bags if the firearm is unloaded, secured and declared to the airline, according to TSA guidelines.
Travelers who bring such items to a security checkpoint can be subject to criminal charges from law enforcement and civil penalties up to $12,000.
