A Virginia Beach man will spend 18 years in prison for robbing an employee of Asian Spa at gunpoint.
Jahlmaar Keith Overton, 25, of the 2200 block of Welsh Drive, was sentenced to 58 years in prison with 40 years suspended on Tuesday by Virginia Beach Circuit Court Judge James C. Lewis. The sentence came more than three months after Overton pleaded guilty to robbery, abduction and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Officials say Overton robbed a female employee who was working alone at the Asian Spa on Jan. 19, 2016. The robbery began when Overton walked into the spa to ask about services, then pulled out a handgun and demanded money, according to a news release from the Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.
When there was no money at the front of the spa, Overton used the gun to force the woman into a hallway where tips were stored. There was also no money there, so he walked her to the back of the spa and demanded money from her purse.
The woman gave him about $350, then ran down the hallway. Overton caught her and threw her into chairs before leaving the spa in a gold Nissan Sentra that was registered to his girlfriend, the release states.
The woman took a picture of Overton’s car and video surveillance showed his face. He was arrested on Jan. 23, 2016 after a Virginia Beach police officer pulled him over.
Overton’s past criminal record includes robbery, three counts of assault, abusive language and disorderly conduct when he was a juvenile, as well as credit card theft and credit card fraud as an adult, according to the release.
