A family of three was displaced and a pet dog was killed after a house fire on Alesa Drive in James City County Thursday afternoon.
A James City County engine company was out on routine assignment when they spotted heavy smoke coming from the Ironbound Square neighborhood around 1:23 p.m., Batallion Chief Al Catlett said.
The firefighters responded and found an elderly woman on the front porch of the house, which had heavy flames coming from the rear, Catlett said. The woman was conscious.
The blaze was brought under control in about 40 minutes by 30 firefighters who responded to the scene, Catlett said. The Williamsburg Fire Department assisted during the incident.
The woman told fire crews that she lived in the house with her two sons.
While firefighters worked to contain the fire, they found a dog outside of the house, which succumbed to its injuries from the fire, Catlett said.
The woman complained of smoke inhalation and was sent to Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center, Catlett said.
The home is severely damaged and uninhabitable, Catlett said.
The fire is still under investigation by fire marshals and the cause has not been determined.
