A two-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 killed a 27-year-old man this morning, police said.
Charles E.S. Garrett, of Williamsburg, died after his 2006 Honda Civic struck the rear of 2015 Freightliner tractor-trailer carrying 16,000 pounds of paper, wedging his car under the tractor-trailer, according to a Virginia State Police news release.
The crash occurred at around 5:19 a.m. Wednesday just prior to Exit 214 on I-64 East in New Kent County.
Police said Garrett was driving his Honda at a high rate of speed when he changed lanes from the right to the left then back to the right lane, striking the tractor-trailer in the rear.
The driver of the tractor-trailer thought a tire had blown and pulled over, then realized he had been struck by another vehicle, police said.
Garrett, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene. Speed is being considered as a factor in the crash, police said.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
