Two members of the City of Williamsburg Planning Commission have been reappointed to serve a four-year term.
Demetrios Florakis, who currently serves as chairman, and David Julien received the appointment after a vote from City Council on Dec. 10.
Their current terms will expire Dec. 31. The new terms will run through 2019.
Because both Florakis and Julien expressed interest in returning to the Planning Commission, the city did not actively seek out new applicants. No other applications for the board were submitted.
Julien is the president of the Williamsburg Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealership on Richmond Road. He was named to the board in May after College of William & Mary student Chris Connolly – the first student in city history to serve on the Planning Commission – stepped down after graduation.
Because he filled out someone else’s term on the Planning Commission, he is eligible for two full four-year terms.
Florakis, a property developer, has served on the Planning Commission since 2012 and has been chairman since 2014.
Florakis is also currently facing a felony embezzlement charge in Williamsburg-James City County Circuit Court. He is accused of stealing materials from the City Lofts construction site – a project in which his company partnered with Courthouse Construction Inc. – and using them for a different project on Scotland Street.
He was indicted the same day he was named chairman in 2014, and various motions and continuances have pushed the case into its second year. Florakis had been scheduled to go to trial in early December, but his attorney, state Sen. Tommy Norment, successfully argued for another continuance.
A status hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Jan. 4, during which a new trial date may be set.
