The City of Williamsburg, James City County and York County have released their trick-or-treat hours for Saturday, in addition to a list of helpful tips for a fun and safe Halloween.
Trick-or-treating in James City County and the City of Williamsburg will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. and is open to children 12 and under. In York County, trick-or-treating will take place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and is also open to kids 12 and under.
The localities advise costumes should be easy to walk in and easy to spot in the dark. Reflective tape can be sewn into costumes for extra visibility. Additionally, masks should be avoided if they impair a child’s vision in any way and should always be removed when crossing the street.
Trick-or-treaters are encouraged to plan their route and stop only on streets that are well-lit and familiar. Young children should be accompanied by an adult, and older children should go out in groups of no fewer than three.
Whenever possible, trick-or-treaters should stick to the sidewalk or, where one is not present, to the far side of the road and facing traffic. Children should only cross at corners and never between parked cars.
Additionally, both counties ask that residents who wish to receive trick-or-treaters identify themselves by putting on their front porch lights. They should also be cautious of using flames in their jack-o-lanterns or other decorations.
Finally, parents should check all trick-or-treaters’ candy upon their return, and children should be instructed not to accept unwrapped candy or fruit.
