Firefighters came across a home lab when checking for structural damage after a car crashed into the building when attempting to park.
A resident of the apartment is a chemistry enthusiast, and the hazmat team determined his home lab to be safe and free of hazardous materials, said Maj. Greg Riley of the Williamsburg Police Department.
The hazmat team fully cleared the area around 8 p.m. Wednesday.
The driver, a 25-year-old Williamsburg man, has been charged with reckless driving.

Emergency personnel investigated the possibility of hazardous materials in an apartment on Mount Vernon Avenue on Wednesday, police said.
Around 8:05 a.m., units from the City of Williamsburg’s police and fire departments responded to a single-vehicle crash in which a car struck an apartment building on the 1400 block of Mount Vernon Avenue, said Maj. Greg Riley of the Williamsburg Police Department.
No one was injured in the crash.
As firefighters looked into whether the building sustained any significant structural damage, they “stumbled across a possible hazmat situation,” Riley said.
Hazmat is a term for hazardous materials.
A portion of Mount Vernon Avenue was been blocked until mid-afternoon because of the emergency vehicles, but residents were able to enter and exit the apartment complex.
Hazmat teams investigated the building. The results of that investigation have not yet been disclosed.
