Area Programs Aim to Keep Residents Warm

cofmWith cold temperatures and blustering winds outside, local entities are offering refuge.

James City County is offering a warming center during the day at its Recreation Center on Longhill Road this week, and the Community of Faith Mission offers overnight shelter through a network of area churches.

The JCC warming center is open to citizens and visitors during regular operating hours, which are from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Call 259-4200 for more information.

The Community of Faith Mission, started three years ago by various institutions of the faith community, offers visitors a hot meal and warm place to sleep for the night, along with breakfast and a bagged lunch for the next day. Managed by volunteers, the shelter rotates location through participating churches on a weekly basis.

Through Sunday, the shelter will be at Williamsburg Community Chapel, followed by Williamsburg Christian Church next week.

After opening for 12 weeks its first year, the Community of Mission has expanded to 18 weeks, and last year served 86 people in that time.

See the full list of dates and places for this year on the Community of Faith Mission website.
