A person bitten by a medium-sized gray and white dog in James City County may have to be treated with shots for the prevention of rabies if the dog is not found.
Officials from the Peninsula Health District said in a news release the dog bit the person Monday near Indian Summer Lane in James City County.
The bite victim will have to undergo post-exposure treatment for the prevention of rabies if the animal is not found.
If found, the dog will be placed under in-home confinement for 10 days.
Anyone who may have seen a dog matching the description in the area is asked to call the Peninsula Health District-Williamsburg Environmental Health at 757-603-4277. If after hours, call the James City County/Williamsburg Animal Control at 757-253-1800.
Residents are asked to report all exposures, enjoy wildlife from a distance and make sure their family pets are vaccinated and protected against the rabies virus.
Virginia state law requires dogs and cats to be vaccinated between three and four months of age and thereafter to maintain protection against rabies.
