A 19-year-old York County man accused of stabbing his mother to death in their Yorkshire Downs home on March 4 called 911 after the alleged act took place and told the dispatcher there had been a “murder” in the home before saying “oh by the way, I did it,” according to court records.
Deputies from the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office arrested Ronnie Lavender Dovbish shortly after they responded to the home on the 100 block of Ponsonby Drive. He faces one count of second-degree homicide for the alleged killing of his mother, 40-year-old Heather Perkins.
A criminal complaint filed against Dovbish in York-Poquoson Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court said Dovbish admitted to stabbing his mother three times before choking her. He also provided information about the weapon he used, including where he found it. The type of weapon was not identified in the complaint. He told investigators the motive for the killing was “past memories,” according to the complaint.
York County 911 dispatchers received a call from a man March 4 who reported he had just come home and found his mother dead, saying he believed there had been a “murder,” according to the complaint. He then gave dispatchers the correct number to the house but an incorrect street name before hanging up. Operators called him back, at which point he gave additional details about his location before saying “oh by the way, I did it,” according to the complaint.
Dispatchers pinged the caller’s cell phone and plotted the address at the residence on Ponsonby Drive. YPSO deputies and first responders from the York County Division of Fire and Life Safety responded to the house and found Dovbish standing outside, where he was “immediately detained” for questioning, according to the complaint. Deputies then entered the house and found Perkins in a bedroom with at least one suspected stab wound to the back.
Perkins was pronounced dead shortly after being assessed by first responders. One of the deputies noted blood and “body fluids” in the residence and said the victim’s pants were unfastened at the time she was found. The deputy also noted a possible weapon located in “close proximity” to the victim, according to the complaint.
Dovbish was taken from the scene by deputies for questioning, at which point he admitted to the killing, according to the complaint.
