The Williamsburg-James City County Circuit Court has granted an extension on James City County’s ability to issue General Obligation bonds to purchase greenspace or preserve land in the county.
In April, the James City County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution to request an extension from the court on a 3-2 vote with Berkeley Supervisor Mary Jones and Stonehouse Supervisor Jim Kennedy opposed. On Nov. 8, 2005, James City County voters approved a ballot question asking whether the county should contract a debt to issue the bonds in an amount not to exceed $20 million. The ballot question passed with more than 78 percent of the vote; 15,805 people approved it.
In December 2006, the county used $6 million of the bonds to purchase the Jamestown Beach Campground and Yacht Basin.
With $14 million remaining in bonds, the county had until Nov. 7 this year to issue the remaining bonds. With the extension, announced at the end of Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting, the county has until Nov. 7, 2015 to use the bonds for greenspace acquisition and land preservation.
The extension does not require the county to use the bonds.
