Four Candidates on Today’s Democratic Primary Ballot

Today is the Democratic Primary for the state of Virginia, and two candidates each for Attorney General and Lieutenant Governor will be on the ballot should you choose to participate.

Aneesh Chopra and Ralph Northam square off for lieutenant governor, while Justin Fairfax and Mark Herring vie for the attorney general nomination. There are no challengers for General Assembly seats featured on the ballot.

You can see what’s on your ballet in any Virginia election by visiting the Virginia State Board of Elections website. That website also features information about polling places, absentee voting and voter registration.

Terry McAuliffe is the Democratic nominee for governor, as he is the only candidate who submitted the necessary petition signatures to the Democratic Party of Virginia. He will run unopposed in today’s primary.

Chopra, who served as Gov. Tim Kaine’s secretary of technology, was appointed in 2009 as the nation’s first Chief Technology Officer. He lives in Arlington. Northam, who practiced pediatric neurology at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, has served in the Virginia Senate since 2007.

Fairfax served as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, where he worked in the Major Crimes and Narcotics Unit of the Alexandria Division. Herring, the founder of law firm Herring & Turner in Leesburg, has served in the Virginia Senate since 2006.

In 2009, the Democratic Primary brought out 3,576 voters in James City County, which is about 7.4 percent of registered voters in the county. York County attracted 2,448, which is about 5.5 percent of active voters. Williamsburg saw 850 turn out, which is about 10.1 percent.

The Republican ticket has already been established, with current Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli vying for the governor’s seat. EW Jackson, a lawyer and Christian bishop who founded Exodus Faith Ministries, is the Republican candidate for lieutenant governor. Mark Obenshain, who was elected to the Virginia Senate in 2003, is running for attorney general.
