Williamsburg Notebook: Budget Talks, Community Pool, WRHA Meeting

Williamsburg is the last locality in the Historic Triangle to adopt a budget. James City and York counties have already adopted operating budgets for the next fiscal year. Adoption for a Williamsburg budget is scheduled for Thursday. We’ve also got you covered on affordable swim lessons at Williamsburg Community Pool.

Budget Talks Continue at Monday Work Session

The Williamsburg City Council will continue to discuss the fiscal year 2014 budget this week, with a potential adoption coming at a meeting Thursday.

A work session at 4 p.m. Monday at the Stryker Building will feature a presentation from Finance Director Phil Serra. City Manager Jack Tuttle presented a $51.6 million budget proposal at an April 1 meeting. He said property tax revenue is expected to increase by 2.8 percent, while government revenue is expected to climb 10.5 percent. The biggest spending increase will be its contribution of $8.4 million to the Williamsburg-James City County School System.

The council will meet again at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Stryker Building for the regular meeting.

The work session will also provide an update on the proposed widening of Interstate 64.

City of Williamsburg Partners with Williamsburg Community Pool to Provide Swim Lessons

The City of Williamsburg will partner with the Williamsburg Community Pool to sponsor a youth swim lesson pilot program this summer.

The sponsorship will create affordable swim lessons for children after the January decision to close the pool at the Quarterpath Recreation Center for the 2013 summer season.

The lessons are offered to children ages 3 to 11, and will be conducted at two Monday to Thursday sessions. One runs from June 17 to 27 and the other from Aug. 5 to 13.

WRHA to Host Meeting Monday

The Williamsburg Redevelopment and Housing Authority will hold a Board of Commissioners meeting 5 p.m. Monday at the Stryker Building.

The meeting will feature the annual financial report for the authority, presented by Anne Wall, audit manager for Robinson, Farmer, Cox Associates. Director of Finance Phil Serra will also present five areas of concern found by Wall’s analysis.

Quarterly reports will also be presented.
