Bruton, York High Schools Make Washington Post’s List of Most Challenging High Schools

Two York County high schools have made the Washington Post’s annual list of the most challenging high schools in the country.

Bruton and York high schools were ranked 501st and 517th, respectively. Among Virginia high schools, Bruton and York were ranked 36th and 37th. Virginia had 101 high schools on the list, many of which were in Northern Virginia. The ranking put them ahead of all the other Hampton Roads area high schools on the list, which aside from Warwick and Menchville high schools in Newport News, were all in Virginia Beach.

The Post’s formula uses the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year and divides by the number of seniors who graduated in May or June. Nine percent of the approximately 22,000 public high schools in the country made the list.

According to the Post, the rankings are designed to identify schools that have done the best to persuade average students to take college-level courses and tests. Because of this, the schools had to have an average SAT score below 2000 or an average ACT score below 29.3 to be included on the list.

The top high school on the list was American Indian Public Charter in Oakland, Calif. You can view the entire list by clicking here.
