Two Chesterfield County residents are dead following a head-on motor vehicle crash that occurred shortly after 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 16 on Interstate 64 westbound at the 223 mile marker in New Kent County.
Virginia State Police responded to the scene after the driver of a 2004 Honda CRV, who was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Interstate 64, struck the driver of a 1996 Ford Ranger head-on.
Both drivers, who were wearing their safety belts, died at the scene. Their bodies were transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond.
The driver of the wrong-way Honda was identified as James E. Fred, a 54-year-old from Chesterfield. The driver of the pickup Fred hit was 47-year-old John J. Keesler, also of Chesterfield.
Interstate 64 westbound was closed until approximately 3 a.m. this morning, April 17.
A State Police spokesman said the crash remains under investigation.
