York Man Arrested After Pursuit, Crash in Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel

A York County man was arrested Monday after he fled police when they tried to pull him over for allegedly driving a stolen vehicle.

Scott S. Taboh, 49, was taken into custody by Virginia State Police after he crashed a 2002 Mazda truck in the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. Sgt. Michelle Anaya of the Virginia State Police said troopers saw the truck driving through a safety work zone and tried to pull the vehicle over. The driver crashed in the tunnel and was taken to the hospital along with another passenger.

It is unclear whether the passenger has also been charged.

About 30 minutes before the crash in the tunnel, Taboh was spotted in York County driving the stolen vehicle. York deputies tried to pull him over, but he fled and led them on a brief pursuit. Police gave up the chase when the vehicle entered a heavily congested part of Interstate 64 where roadwork was under way, according to a news release from the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Department.

Taboh has been charged with a trio of felonies: unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, larceny of a motor vehicle, and evade and elude. He is also facing a pair of misdemeanors: reckless driving and driving with a suspended license.

Anaya said Taboh is currently in the custody of the Hampton City Jail.
