The Williamsburg-James City County School Board appointed a new assistant principal for Matoaka Elementary School at its Tuesday meeting.
Sandra van Leliveld comes to Matoaka from James River Elementary, where she teaches third grade. She has taught third and fifth grades, and served as a team leader for four years. She also was the after-school facilitator for two years.
Van Leliveld organized and implemented the summer reading program at James River, where she also implemented a combined fourth grade/fifth grade writing program. She encouraged James River staff to get physically fit by organizing a “Walk Across America” program.
She was also the Elementary Connections Facilitator, responsible for development programs for all new elementary teachers division-wide.
Van Leliveld replaces Michael Hurley, who left Matoaka to become assistant principal at Toano Middle School.
