International best-selling author David Baldacci will be the special guest for Literacy for Life’s annual Reading Between the Wines fundraiser in October.
Baldacci, a native Virginian, has written 24 novels, all of which became bestsellers worldwide. His first, “Absolute Power,” was adapted to the big screen with Clint Eastwood as its director and star. His latest book, “The Innocent,” topped the bestseller list just after it debuted in April and remains in the top 100. The novel is a thriller about a government hitman who backs off on a job and becomes a target himself.
Baldacci’s appearance in Williamsburg aims to highlight adult literacy, the mission of Literacy for Life, and also to bring attention to his family’s Wish You Well foundation. Nearly 100 million people in the United States cannot read, and cannot make decisions that depend on the ability to process the written word, according to a press release about the event.
Literacy for Life is a local nonprofit that teaches adults the literacy skills required for self-sufficiency, better health and meaningful participation in society. Last year its volunteer tutors helped more than 500 people in our community attain those skills.
Wish You Well was established by David Baldacci and his wife Michelle in 2002. Its mission is to support family literacy in the United States by fostering and promoting the development and expansion of new and existing literacy and educational programs.
To date, it has given grants to more than 40 nonprofits that target improving literacy across the country.
Tickets are on sale for $60 each. The event, which is approaching a sellout, will take place 6 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at the College of William and Mary’s School of Education. Each ticket includes a wine and heavy hors d’ouevres reception, specialty basket raffle and silent auction for items including beach house vacations and a private dinner for 10 at The Trellis, which will precede Baldacci’s talk.
Reading Between the Wines is being supported by lead sponsor Wells Fargo Advisors, with help from Heritage Commons of Williamsburg, King’s Creek Plantation and the Plantation Group, LLC.
