JAMES CITY COUNTY — The county’s emergency alert system is getting a behind-the-scenes upgrade this month, and residents who rely on it for severe weather and public safety notifications will need to take a few steps to stay up to date.
JCC Alert, which allows residents to receive emergency notifications by text, phone call or email, is moving to a new provider called Rave on July 1. Current subscribers don’t need to do anything before the switch — contact information and communication preferences will be automatically transferred at 11 a.m. June 29.
Subscribers should expect an email from [email protected] around that time with an option to confirm their email address. Those who want to get a head start can also register directly at jccalert.org.
One thing that won’t carry over automatically: customized notification preferences, such as specific weather alert types. Subscribers can log into jccalert.org after June 29 to update those settings.
The transition also brings a change for water customers. James City Service Authority water outage alerts, previously delivered through JCC Alert, will no longer be part of the system after the switch. Residents who want to keep receiving JCSA water outage alerts and other announcements should register for the JCSA Customer Portal at myaccount.JCSAva.gov.
What stays the same: emergency calls will continue to show 757-564-2165 on caller ID, and emails will come from [email protected] or [email protected]. Text alerts will come from one of four short codes: 226-787, 672-83, 780-15 or 772-95.
