HAMPTON ROADS — Two award-winning groups are coming to Hampton Roads for upcoming performances as a part of the fall programming for the Virginia Arts Festival.
The festival, which was established in 1997, brings performers from around the globe to Hampton Roads. The group is responsible for hosting numerous world premieres and new productions of classical music, dance, and theater throughout the region.
“We want Virginia Arts Festival to be your home for great performances year-round,” said the Festival’s Perry Artistic Director Robert W. Cross. “We are thrilled to share these artists with our communities throughout Hampton Roads.”
On Sunday, Oct. 12 and Tuesday, Oct. 14, the Soweto Gospel Choir will visit both Newport News and Norfolk. The GRAMMY and Emmy Award-winning ensemble sings mostly traditional gospel and R&B classics. They will showcase their new program, “Peace”, with music from Aretha Franklin, Harry Belafonte, Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Leonard Cohen and more.
The Oct. 12 performance will be held at the Ferguson Center for the Arts in Newport News, while the Oct. 14 performance will be held at the Attucks Theater in Norfolk.
On Thursday, Oct. 23, Step Afrika! will perform in Norfolk. The show blends percussive dance styles that are practiced historically by African American fraternities and sororities. The group will integrate songs, storytelling, humor, and audience participation. The show will take place at Chrysler Hall in Norfolk.
Tickets for all shows are still available through the Virginia Arts Festival. For more information, visit vafest.org.
