Del. Monty Mason recently announced the winners of his office’s second consecutive 93rd District Art Contest.
Mason sent out the challenge to students of all ages in the district, which includes parts of James City County, York County, and the City of Newport News in addition to the City of Williamsburg.
The contest was broken down into four age-group categories: grades K-3, 4-5, 6-8 and 9-12.
Students were invited to submit oil, acrylic or watercolor paintings, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, pastel, ink or marker drawings, collages, lithograph, silkscreen or block prints, computer-generated art, photographs and mixed media images.
Local artists Bob Carlson and Bob Oller judged the contest and selected winners in each of the four categories.
Ava Harr, a third-grader from a Newport News elementary school took home top honors in the K-3 category with a watercolor of fall leaves.
Edward Ortega, also from Newport News, won the 4-5 category with a multimedia image of a fish swimming through water.
Iyla Dabney, a seventh-grader at Lois Hornsby Middle School, was the 6-8 category winner. Dabney used pointillism to create an image of a red bird composed of hundreds of individual dots. She was encouraged to enter the competition by her teacher, Kenneth Edwards.
Finally, Kayla Harris of Newport News’ Woodside High School won the 9-12 category for her photograph entitled “Lost Treasure.”
“I look forward to welcoming these students to the General Assembly and inviting them to be introduced to the House of Delegates this upcoming session,” Mason said. “It is a small thanks for allowing me to display such exceptional local artwork outside my office for the rest of the Commonwealth to appreciate again this year.”
