YORK COUNTY — Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal shooting Wednesday night on Interstate 64 eastbound near the 242-mile marker in York County.
The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation was on the scene and all eastbound lanes of I-64 at the 242-mile marker remained closed as of 8:44 p.m. to preserve the crime scene.
Police said preliminary investigations have revealed that a 2024 blue Honda SUV ran off the roadway and struck the guardrail in the eastbound lanes just west of the 243-mile marker. The female driver of the vehicle was transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
At this stage, police said the incident appears to be isolated, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
A traffic diversion remains in place at Humelsine Parkway, and motorists are being advised to seek alternate routes and expect delays.
VSP said it is actively seeking the public’s assistance. Anyone who may have witnessed the Honda SUV, or observed any interactions between this vehicle and another vehicle before the 243-mile marker, is asked to contact State Police at [email protected] or to call 804-750-8788.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
