Drive Safe Hampton Roads Offering 757 Sober Rides for Cinco de Mayo

HAMPTON ROADS — Drive Safe Hampton Roads is sponsoring 757 Sober Ride for those 21 and older who are celebrating Cinco de Mayo with alcohol, legal or illegal drugs.

DSHR is asking those celebrating Cinco de Mayo, the popular day to celebrate Mexican-American culture in the United States, to designate a sober driver — one who has not consumed any alcohol, legal or illegal drugs. Never drive while impaired and never let a friend drive if they show any signs of impairment, it adds.

“If you are going to celebrate on Cinco de Mayo, the message is simple: plan ahead. Enjoy Cinco de Mayo responsibly. Designate a sober driver ahead of time, call a sober friend or use DSHR’s 757 Sober Ride program to get home safely,” said Bob Clinebell, President of Drive Safe Hampton Roads.

“If you are the designated driver, commit to 100% sobriety to keep you and your friends safe. If you believe you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement immediately,” he adds. “If you have a friend who is about to drive impaired, take away their keys and help them to get home safely. Impaired driving crashes, fatalities and injuries are 100% preventable.”

DSHR is sponsoring the 757 Sober Ride campaign for Cinco de Mayo from 6 p.m. on Monday, May 5, until 3 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6. Powered by Lyft, individuals 21 and older can take advantage of the free service by following these steps:

  • Download the Lyft app to a cell phone
  • Go to drivesafehr.org/757-sober-ride to get the 757 Sober Ride promo code
  • DSHR’s Cinco de Mayo 757 Sober Ride promo code will be posted at 6 p.m. on Monday, May 5
  • Enter the 757 Sober Ride promo code in the app’s “Payment” tab under the “Add Lyft Pass” option
  • Receive a no-cost (up to $15) sober ride

The code will only be active during the above-stated period for rides originating in or having a destination within Hampton Roads. Rides are valid while supplies last and subject to Lyft’s Terms of Service.

According to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, on Cinco de Mayo 2024, there were 373 crashes, involving four fatalities, two of which were alcohol-related, with 194 injuries in the commonwealth.

Supporters of the 2025 757 Sober Ride campaigns are Drive Safe Hampton Roads, Huffman & Huffman Brothers-in-Law, and the campaign is funded in part by a grant from the Virginia DMV.
