YORK COUNTY— With no state budget in place for the upcoming fiscal year, York County School Division officials delayed adoption of the division’s FY27 budget during Monday night’s school board meeting, citing uncertainty over how much funding will come from Richmond.

In March, the York County School Division adopted a proposed $205,985,675 budget. Of that total, 74.6% is allocated to instruction, 8.1% to operations and maintenance, 6.8% to technology, 5.6% to pupil transportation and 4.9% to administration, attendance and health services.

Planned capital improvement projects for FY2027 include a bus loop, additional parking at Dare Elementary and the School Board Office, replacement of the Dare Elementary gym HVAC system, new HVAC equipment and controls at Bruton High, a geothermal conversion with HVAC and electrical upgrades at Tabb High and modular classrooms across the division.

The state budget remains under development, leaving local school divisions uncertain how much funding they will receive. House Speaker Don Scott said the biennial spending plan will not be ready for review until June. Without final state numbers, York officials said they cannot adopt a final budget. The state budget currently sits at $212 billion.

During the meeting, Superintendent James Carroll outlined how the division plans to use anticipated state funding.

“The number one additional item was additional compensation across the board for all employees,” he said.

Once the state budget is approved, the York County School Division will announce when the board can adopt its FY27 spending plan.
