YORKTOWN — The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown will feature a book-signing event and talk by Laurie Halse Anderson, an author of historical fiction novels, on Saturday, Jan. 17.

Anderson is the author of the Seeds of America Trilogy: “Chains,” “Forge,” and “Ashes,” and “Independent Dames: What You Never Knew About the Women and Girls of the American Revolution.” The book-signing event will take place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the museum shop, where her books are available for purchase.

At 5:15 p.m., the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation said Anderson will discuss how she researches and incorporates primary sources into her works of juvenile historical fiction. The free talk, designed especially for educators, is open to the public, with walk-ins welcome. Registration is encouraged at teacher.programs@jyf.virginia.gov.

JYF said Anderson is speaking as part of the foundation’s Teacher Professional Development Workshop, “Woven Through Time: Peopling the Past,” taking place Jan. 16-18, and sponsored in part by the American Historical Association and the Library of Congress.

Teachers pre-registered for the three-day workshop will explore a new “People of the Past” online education resource, learn how to incorporate primary sources in the classroom, receive primary source-based lessons and activities for classroom use, learn to align lessons with state and national social studies standards of learning, and strengthen social studies literacy in the classroom, the foundation said.

The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, along with its museum shop and café, is open Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Museum admission is $20 for adults, $10 for youth ages 6-12 and free for ages 5 and under. Admission is not required to visit the museum shop or café. Parking is free.
