JAMES CITY COUNTY — James City County’s Office of Elections recently announced it is short 20 election officers ahead of the Nov. 4 election.
Election officers staff polling places throughout the day on Election Day, greet voters, check voters in, distribute ballots, ensure voting machines are working properly and assist voters in curbside voting.
“If you would like to learn first hand on how elections are actually conducted, help ensure integrity in the process, and help your neighbors have a great voting experience in a nonpartisan way, come be part of the process,” Dianna Moorman, General Registrar and Director of James City County Elections, said.
James City has 18 polling places throughout the county; of those, 12 polling places are short on election officers.
The job entails staffing the polling location from 5 a.m. until roughly 9 p.m. Officers must be able to work the entire day in order to ensure consistent integrity throughout the day.
“While the law does require EOs to list a party preference for a balance in representation, we absolutely require a neutral environment while representing our Office. Integrity and transparency are always our highest priority throughout the entire election process, and our team of EOs are part of that equation for a successful election,” Moorman added.
Officers must attend a mandatory four-hour training prior to Election Day. Mandatory training pays $25 and working the full Election Day shift pays $125.
If interested in serving, residents must be 18 or older and registered Virginia voters. To learn more or to sign up for the training, visit the James City County Office of Elections website. To speed up the process, interested parties can email vote@jamescitycountyva.gov.
