WILLIAMSBURG — A dedication to the 2nd New Jersey Brigade, which experienced more casualties during the 1862 Battle of Williamsburg than any other battle during the entire Civil War, will take place 162 years to the day and time of the battle on Saturday.

The Old Baldy Civil War Roundtable and the Williamsburg Battlefield Association will unveil a new Civil War Trails sign at a ceremony on May 5 at 9 a.m.

The ceremony will include the color guard from Joint Base Langley Eustis, the unveiling of the new sign, a wreath laying and the reading of a Senate resolution.

The new Civil War Trails sign is located at the Teamsters Hall, 7294 Merrimac Trail, Williamsburg. Guests attending the ceremony are encouraged to park nearby along Orange Drive.

The newest Civil War Trails site in the nation joins over 1,500 others in what is often called the ‘World’s Largest Open Air Museum,’ according to Civil War Trails. Each Civil War Trails site is marketed internationally as a destination for history lovers.

“Introducing our new Civil War Trail site in Williamsburg signifies a significant milestone in historical exploration and an exciting expansion or history enthusiasts,” remarked Julia Smyth-Young, Interim CEO of Visit Williamsburg. “With immersive experiences at its heart, this endeavor is set to revolutionize our connection with the past. We eagerly anticipate welcoming visitors to explore and discover Williamsburg.”

The addition of the site to the Civil War Trails program was made possible by the Old Baldy Civil War Roundtable in New Jersey whose mission is to promote education, preservation, and the memory of the Civil War Era.

The Roundtable not only fundraised the initial costs associated with adding a site to the program but will ensure the sign will be maintained and promoted.

Members of the Roundtable have organized a group tour which will spend the weekend in Williamsburg visiting significant Civil War sites, taking tours, hosting lecturers, and more.

“I couldn’t be prouder of our organization and members for sponsoring this sign.” said Frank Barletta, Board Member from the Roundtable. “I cannot think of a more fitting memorial to this overlooked major battle of the war.”

New Jersey Senator Latham Tiver recognized the upcoming event and the service and sacrifice of the 2nd New Jersey Brigade in a recent New Jersey Senate Resolution.
