1 Dead in James City County House Fire

(James City County)

JAMES CITY COUNTY — A house fire claimed the life of a 70-year-old woman in the 4000 block of Frances Berkeley in the Greensprings Plantation subdivision in James City County on Monday evening.

According to officials, the James City County Fire Department responded to a report of a residential fire at approximately 5:22 p.m. on April 8.

Crews arrived to find fire showing from multiple windows on the first and second floor of the home, with significant fire involvement on the rear, fire officials said. According to neighbors, two occupants were possibly still inside the home.

Access to the main portion of the home was limited due to significant fire conditions and partial collapse of the second floor, according to officials. Search and rescue efforts were initiated through multiple windows on the first and second floors without locating the occupants. An investigation determined that one occupant was not home at the time of the fire, however, a second occupant was believed to still be inside.

Once the fire was under control, the occupant was found and pronounced dead at the scene, according to fire officials.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the James City County Fire Marshal’s Office.

The Williamsburg Fire Department assisted at the scene.
