WJCC Schools Implement No Bag Policy, Weapons Detectors for High School Athletic Events

(WJCC Schools)

WILLIAMSBURG — A no-bag policy and heightened security measures for public high school athletic events go into effect at WJCC Schools on Wednesday, Jan 3.

The new policies, announced in December, were described by WJCC Schools as a proactive measure, and not put in place in response to a specific threat or incident.
“We simply want to maintain the safest atmosphere possible. We anticipate expanding this practice to additional public events outside of athletics in the new year, as an added layer of security for our family and community gatherings,” WJCC schools said in an announcement on its website.
The following policies are in effect beginning Jan. 3:
  • No bag policy: No bags of any size (backpacks, purses, tote bags, camera bags, etc.) will be permitted. Guests will be required to return bags to their vehicle before entering an event. School principals will provide direction for students participating in or attending events immediately after school, as appropriate.
  • Weapon detectors: All guests will pass through weapons detection gates, similar to those used at Busch Gardens, sporting events, concerts, and more. The division has used metal detectors at large events and will expand the practice in the new year.

WJCC Schools cautioned those planning to attend athletic events in 2024 should keep in mind:

  • Bags will not be permitted inside. Exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis for medical/personal care needs.
  • Guests who leave an event and wish to reenter are subject to repeated security screening.
