YORK COUNTY — Contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are scheduled to start rehabilitation work on the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge (Route 17) this weekend requiring extended daytime single-lane closures northbound.
The George P. Coleman Bridge is a double-swing span bridge structure over the York River that connects Gloucester Point and Yorktown.
The first northbound single-lane closure is scheduled to take place on Sunday, Nov. 19, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weather permitting, according to VDOT.
Additionally, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. on the day of the closure, all bridge openings will be restricted for maritime traffic until the completion of the rehabilitation work for that day and a successful test opening has been performed, VDOT said.
An inclement weather date for this work has been tentatively scheduled for the same time frame on Sunday, Dec. 3.
This rehabilitation work on the bridge’s wedge drive motors requires 12-hour periods of daylight to perform work safely and efficiently. VDOT said it attempts to schedule maintenance and non-emergency repair work during travel periods when traffic volumes are lower to reduce impacts on motorists.
