WILLIAMSBURG — In her eighth year as a business owner, Lori Erwin continues to make waves in the community.
Paddle On of Williamsburg teaches participants to paddleboard correctly and safely.
“There is a lot more to it than people think,” said Erwin, “I have seen such a growth in this community for paddle boarding since I started my business. It has been wonderful to see!”
There is a lot more to Erwin and her business, as well. She has organized and assisted with many community events, including races, clubs and fundraising activities.
“Beer For The Girls” is one such event. Heading into its third year, the event supports Here For The Girls, a local nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of women diagnosed with breast cancer who are under the age of 51.
Erwin is in charge of the paddle portion of the event, which launches from Powhatan Creek and is open to all paddle craft — paddleboards, kayaks, and canoes. The paddlers work their way to Billsburg Brewery, located at James City County Marina, where a huge party awaits.
“We are excited about the ‘Beer For the Girls’ event, which is a longstanding partnership with both Here for the Girls and Paddle On Williamsburg,” said Darcy Williams, Marketing & Events Director for Billsburg Brewery, “Together we put on an all-day fun and interactive event with music, drinks, food, raffles, activities and a bra decorating contest.”
This year, music will be provided by London and Joe Heilman.
“Last year, the event doubled and it was so much fun being able to raise money for such a good cause,” Erwin continues, “It’s a nice big party where everyone is having a great time but we are also doing something good for the community.”
If a big event is not your style, people are invited to meet every Wednesday (weather permitting) at Billsburg Brewery for its Paddle Club. Participants can bring their own paddle craft, or rent one by calling a day ahead.
The 90-minute social paddle, with a guide, starts at 6:30. Participants are asked to register, starting at 5:30 p.m., at Billsburg Brewery to receive a wristband for a beer discount. You can earn a free T-shirt after your 10th paddle.
