Furry Friends Feature: Dog Days of Summer Call for Drool in the Pool

“Can-non-ball!” It’s almost Drool in the Pool time! The Heritage Humane Society invites area dogs and their human companions to say farewell to “all swim” and “adult swim” and hello to doggy swim.

For the first time, this popular event is being held on a Sunday. On Sept. 17, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., all well-behaved dogs are welcome to the close-out of summer swimming. Held in partnership with James City County Parks and Recreation, Drool in the Pool will continue to be held at the Chickahominy Riverfront Park Pool located at 1350 John Tyler Highway in Williamsburg.

In 2022, more than 240 dogs eagerly participated in Drool in the Pool. Every year the event grows. The event is a sight to behold. Dogs splish, splash around while everyone enjoys music, food, and more in the festive atmosphere.

Belly flops that change lives

Money raised by Drool in the Pool goes to support the homeless pets at Greater Williamsburg’s largest animal shelter. Every year, hundreds of area pets come in as strays or surrenders and there are hundreds more that the shelter is able to help keep with their owners through its community outreach program, the Kibble Kitchen & Beyond. Funds raised from Drool in the Pool and other events help the area’s most vulnerable pet population.

The Heritage Humane Society asks for a $10 donation for each dog participating in Drool in the Pool whether swimming or being an onlooker. Pet lovers can save time by registering their pup or pups online. Payment will also be accepted on the day of the event.

Muddy Marley’s Dog Wash will also be at the event again. For a $10 donation per dog, people can have their dog washed, shampooed and towel dried. For an additional $5, the dog will also receive a nail trim. All proceeds are also being donated to the homeless pets at the shelter.
