Meet Janet McCartney Grimmett, Owner/ Operator
- How long have you owned/been involved with your business?
- Lucky Junque opened in 2017.
- How did you get started in your business/ industry?
- My parents loved, refinished and collected antiques, so I grew up learning about antiques, uses for them and how to respect them. I ran a business in downtown Richmond where I became interested in Architectural Salvage and period lighting, and finally decided I would open my own shop. I would be able to collect the things that I loved and be able treat people the way I thought they should be treated…I am an airplane crash survivor with permanent injuries that has left my left side paralyzed since 2001. The name name Lucky Junque seemed appropriate when opening my business… Life is short, and I’m doing it!
- What is a common misconception about your business?
- That it is the same old place that has been there. It was an unfinished furniture business many years, the big yellow chair has been there over 20 years, however, Lucky Junque is a totally different business, the “Farmhouse” has been cleaned up and stocked with a variety of Antiques, Lighting, Salvage, D.I.Y and local treasures. Everything from local honey, goats milk soaps, locally handmade items and upcycles from antiques to home decor. There is something for everyone!
- What makes you different from the other businesses in this area? Why should a customer pick you?
- Repurpose- Reuse – Upcycle! We are Using Yesterdays Treasures for Today’s Home and Garden, Functional Living and Saving the Planet all at the same time. I was born and raised in upper James City County. I love bringing our community together, whether its for fundraising, projects, or for the love of “old stuff” . We love history and will continue to preserve it and enjoy it. Its good to be home.
- What is the most rewarding thing you get out of what you do?
- I absolutely love and treasure my customers, whom are my friends, I did not want a store, I wanted a shop. I make many friends and meet so many awesome folks…but mostly, I love to see their creative side and helping them pick that perfect piece for their space and knowing we have reused a piece of history that is saving our landfills, but also reminds us of long ago memories.
- What is your favorite movie?
- Forrest- Forrest Gump – He got Magic Legs.
- If someone was to give you a gift (money’s no object) what would you want?
- A workplace and home with no barriers…all Handicapped accessible.

- Determination

- If you had to pick one place in town to take a tourist, where would it be?
