WILLIAMSBURG — The Earth Fare organic grocery store located at 208 Monticello Ave. in Midtown Row is closing at the end of January.

Signs throughout the store confirmed the closure as of Monday, Jan. 13, about half the shelves were empty.

“We’re grateful for the incredible support from the Williamsburg community over the years,” the company said, directing customers to follow its email newsletter for updates on sales and hours.

Last week, the chain announced it would close its last Charlotte, North Carolina location, citing local competition. At the time, an Earth Fare spokeswoman told The Charlotte Observer the company was “healthy and strong.”

The chain originally opened its Williamsburg location in June 2018. In February 2020, it announced it was liquidating all its stores after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The location reopened in September of that year under new ownership.

Earth Fare opened its doors in Asheville, North Carolina in 1975. It currently operates 18 stores in seven states, including three in Virginia, according to the company’s website.

A reason for the closure has not been announced. WYDaily has reached out to Earth Fare for comment.
