RICHMOND — The Capital Region Airport Commission, which oversees Richmond International Airport (RIC), was awarded $1,000,000 in federal funds to support air service operations and expand service to the Pacific Northwest in September.
The U.S. Department of Transportation announced grant awards under the Small Community Air Service Development Program (SCASDP) to benefit communities in 16 states, including Virginia.
The grants assist with the implementation of air service initiatives proposed by each grant application.
The Capital Region Airport Commission’s grant information specifically states “funding will be used for a revenue guarantee and marketing to initiate and support new service to Seattle, WA. The community states that while it has existing service to the West Coast, it has no service to the Pacific Northwest. It states that Seattle service will also provide needed connectivity to Alaska, Hawaii, and western Canada as well.”
“Richmond International Airport is an important hub for travel, tourism, and commerce in Virginia’s Fourth District,” said Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan in a press release. “This federal funding is incredibly welcomed news, especially as the airport continues to report record-breaking numbers of passengers. Congratulations to Richmond International Airport on winning this competitive grant. I am confident this funding will help further enhance their airport operations and support Richmond’s growing economy.”
Richmond International Airport serves nearly 50,000 passengers every day, accounting for more than 4,000,000 passengers annually.
