When one supermarket closes, another one opens.
Kroger Mid-Atlantic announced it will open its 45,000-square-foot Grafton store Wednesday morning on the site of a Farm Fresh that closed in the spring.
There will be a ribbon cutting at 7:45 a.m. before doors open at 8, according to a news release. The store is located at 6500-C George Washington Memorial Highway.
The first 200 customers to enter the store Wednesday will receive a $5 Kroger gift card.
This is the second Kroger location to open after Farm Fresh began selling off its stores in the spring. Kroger invested more than $4 million in the store while renovating it after buying it from Farm Fresh.
“We are ready to open our doors and get to know our new community and customer base,” said Kevin Peterson, store manager at the Grafton Kroger location. “We’ve put a lot of work into this store and we’re proud of what we’ve built together.”
The store will offer a fuel center and pharmacy, in addition to “expansive’ natural food options, bulk dry goods, and dietary and specialty items, according to the news release.
Guests will soon be able to use Kroger’s time-saving “Scan, Bag, Go” technology to scan goods with their smartphone while they shop.
The store will employ more than 90 full-time and part-time employees, 38 of whom worked at Farm Fresh.
The Roanoke-based company operates more than 100 stores across Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Ohio.
During the grand opening ceremony Kroger will donate $4,000 to the York County Church Women United Food Pantry, the York County Fire Station, the Peninsula YMCA and the Boys & Girls Club.
“It’s both exciting and rewarding to be a part of the Kroger team at this time in Hampton Roads,” Peterson said. “I’m looking forward to connecting with our customers and doing my part to give back to the Hampton Roads community.”
