New Norge shop sells unique items to customize and care for the lawn and garden

Just in time for spring, a new store in Norge is hoping to spread some life into local gardens.

A Southern Gardener opened its doors Friday. Inside are an assortment of hundreds of items for tending to and decorating the lawn and garden.

Owner and lifelong gardener Lisa Bux moved from Pennsylvania and opened the first A Southern Gardener in Barhamsville 10 years ago. She said she hopes to inspire a passion for gardening in those who stop in her shop.

Bux said that she often shops at places like Home Depot and Lowe’s for her own garden, but saw there was a demand for difficult-to-find products that the national garden chains don’t carry. So, she decided to stock such items at A Southern Gardener.

“I felt it was important to have a new aspect of our business because we’re just not able to find – either for ourselves or our clients — really fun things for the garden space, and I wanted them to have more choices of good quality products,” Bux sad.

The roughly 1,800 square foot shop sells decorations and art like stone lambs, bird feeders, sundials, plant holders and wind chimes. A Southern Gardener also offers practical, even necessary, gardening and lawn care items, such as garden tools and gloves, chemicals, moss, parasols for preventing sunburn, weather vanes and outdoor seating.

The store will also offer periodic classes and demonstrations to help customers learn lawn care techniques, Bux said. Even children will learn how to adorn the yard, with workshops to teach them how to make scarecrows and holiday decorations.

A Southern Gardener and its five employees provides lawn care services including mowing, mulching, leaf cleanup, creative garden design, tree work, maintenance programs and underground watering systems.

Bux said she thinks the shop will appeal to green thumbs and novice gardeners alike.

“It’s not about selling products, it’s about exciting people into enjoying and wanting to be out in their garden space, to be able to have a wonderful space to go and have a retreat,” Bux said.

The store’s hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday and 12 to 5 p.m. on Sundays. A Southern Gardener is located at 7417 Richmond Road, Williamsburg, Virginia, next to the Norge Shoppes.
