Smokin’ Joe’s BBQ’s time as Yorktown’s source of barbeque has ended.

Smokin’ Joe’s closed its doors Wednesday. According to its Facebook page, the restaurant opened in 1999. The barbecue joint was located on Route 17 in York County, a few blocks down the street from the Washington Square Shopping Center.

“It was a pleasure serving the county,” said General Manager Ashley Moss.

Court documents indicate Smokin’ Joe’s was evicted for delinquent rent. A summons for unlawful detainer was issued January 25, and on May 31 Moss and landowner Donald Reichle entered into an agreed order of possession, formalizing Smokin’ Joe’s removal from the property.

Smokin’ Joe’s also operates a restaurant by the same name in Kilmarnock, Virginia, according to their website.

“I do want to say am truly grateful to have served the community for over a decade,” Moss said via email, “and to have had the privilege to play a part in so many lives. The memories and daily conversations make for great stories to share.”

Editor’s note: After publication, Moss offered an additional comment to what was initially provided. This story has been updated to reflect those comments.
