Brews and Bites: Alewerks Brewing Company

HISTORIC TRIANGLE — Alewerks Brewing Company opened in 2006 as Williamsburg Alewerks, making it the longest-operating craft brewery in Williamsburg and one of the oldest in Virginia.

With two locations, Alewerks Brewing Company operates out of its main brewery in Ewell Industrial Park and the Alewerks L.A.B. (a little auxiliary brewery) at the Premium Outlet Mall.

Brewmaster and Managing Member Geoff Logan transitioned from a career as an active musician and performer to devote his life to perfecting the art of brewing. His extensive understanding of brewing techniques, combined with his exceptional talent and deep respect for tradition, have made Alewerks a leader in Virginia craft beer.

The only taproom in Williamsburg that was never intended to be a taproom, Alewerks was established as a distribution-focused brewery six years before Virginia allowed pints to be served on-site to brewery guests.

The brewery adapted office space near its main production facility into a cozy tasting room with a large, active outdoor beer garden.

It’s easy to enjoy a break at Alewerks for just a few bucks while reflecting on a pint of your favorite beer, but many guests take advantage of the opportunity to sample several small pours in a flight or take home some Alewerks gear exclusive to its locations.

“We always have the widest possible selection of Alewerks beers in bottles and cans. Our beer menu strives to maintain a balance between heritage and ingenuity, and we host food vendors daily to reflect that,” said Jess Davis, Communication Coordinator.

While Alewerks is all about the beer, it is also known for epic sourdough pretzels which are made in-house and served with beer cheese. The beer menu strives to maintain a balance between heritage and ingenuity, and it hosts food vendors daily to reflect that.

Davis said that its bestselling beer is its Superb IPA, but Alewerks is also known for its Pumpkin Ale which is back on tap and rolling out for fall.
