VDOT to close lanes, streets, ramps along I-64 for widening project

Update Oct. 3: Lane and ramp closures listed below have been updated with new information released Tuesday by the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Be careful, motorists. Drivers planning to be out on Interstate 64 and some nearby streets will likely experience nightly delays on Oct. 1-5 due to the I-64 widening project.

Crews contracted by the Virginia Department of Transportation will close a series of interstate on-ramps and off-ramps on I-64 at Route 199 and Fort Eustis Boulevard, according to a Virginia Department of Transportation news release. Alternating single-lane closures will also be in effect between Jefferson Avenue and the Colonial Parkway in both directions of the interstate.

Along with ramp and lane closures, VDOT will also continue its long-term traffic patterns — with one lane of traffic remaining open in each direction on Jefferson Avenue and Yorktown Road at the I-64 overpasses.

A full list of scheduled closures is below.

Lane closures:

• Alternating single-lane closures on I-64 east and west Oct. 1-5, as early as 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., starting near Lee Hall (Exit 247) and ending near Jefferson Avenue (Exit 255).
• Alternating single-lane closures on I-64 east and west Oct. 1-5, starting as early as 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. from the Colonial Parkway to Lee Hall (Exit 247)
• Lane closures under flagger control on Jefferson Avenue at the I-64 overpasses on Oct. 1-5, from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.
• There are long-term traffic patterns with one lane of traffic remaining open in each direction on Jefferson Avenue and Yorktown Road at the I-64 overpasses.

Road closures:

• Yorktown Road at the I-64 overpass on Oct. 1-3, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Ramp closures:

• I-64 west off-ramp to Jefferson Avenue (Exit 250B) on Oct. 1-2.
• I-64 east on- and off-ramps at Fort Eustis Boulevard west (Exit 250A) from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Oct. 4.
• I-64 east on- and off-ramps at Fort Eustis Boulevard east (Exit 250B) from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. on Oct. 6.
• Signs will be in place to alert motorists to the ramp closures and detours.
